Could I solve

Luke

Skywalkers

family dynamic?

Role: Research, concept & brand developer

Client: JKR Competition

Brief:

To ‘pick a film and package a product that solves

problem or fufils a need for the characters in it.’

Big Idea:

Reimagining DNA testing of the future AND balancing

the bridge in this brief by designing for both the star

wars universe and the real one!

I decided quite early on that I needed to stand out from the current DNA test market. This was in order for my product to both make an impact in both the sci-fi Star Wars realm and also in the future-hungry real world. DNA-fingerprinting technology is on the rise for the use of collecting DNA and is currently used on certain boarder controls internationally. This made it the perfect method of DNA collection for my testing DNA kit as it is new, innovative, and digital in nature.

The final design for the packaging of my DNA test is both playful and 'other-worldly' in experience. Unlike other DNA tests, the fingerprinting device is folded into soft material to create an enjoyable sensory experience and provide an almost luxury feeling to the product. The branding is designed to be comedic in copy and entice the main demographic of late adolescent men aged 16-25 (Luke Skywalkers age demographic) through its boyish/comedic style in combination with its sleek and futuristic product.
Finally, there are symbols included to illustrate how the device is opperated. It works by sending the data collected from the fingerprint scan through to a mobile device via bluetooth. The use of such simple symbols was inspired and the constant use of symbolism in the star wars universe and by Luke Skywalkers assumed illteracy. It streamlines the learning process by providing an almost cheat code to the device workings and how its results can be accessed.

I mocked up a billboard to imagine how the product would be advertised in the real world alongside some basic brand guidelines.

I placed my test in-situ in the Star Wars universe to further portray how the design would blend with the environment of said universe! (The design is slightly altered due to lack of text in the star wars universe, however utilising the same assets- including a medical droid illustration!)

Finally, I put the DNA testing device in-situ as being presented to the clone troopers as a comedic and final addition to this project.
